What live things can I feed my hamster? I heard they eat meat?
*~*Dancing Diva*~* asked:
What live bugs or meats can they eat? It doesnt really have to be live. I heard you can give them mealworms. Is this true?
When people say you can feed them mealworms, does that mean live? What if they swallow them live? Do you give them a whole mealworm? Will it give my baby Darla any vitamins or nutrience?

Don’t feed your hamster meat. It is not easily digested. Just feed your hamster hamster food.

Though there is no harm in feeding hamsters small pieces of meat, I refrain from doing so and all my hamsters have been vegetarian (I do give them milk, cheese and hard boiled egg) and have lived long lifes.
Logically speaking, hamsters in the wild predominantly live on grains and seeds. so better to give the same diet to tamed hamsters too. You can feed crickets (small ones) and mealworms, it gives hamsters protein in their diet, but make sure you buy them from a authorised pet shop and not feed them crickets caught in the wild as the wild ones may have some disease.
You can gutload the insects by throwing them in boiling water and freeze them instantly and give the hamster one or two as and when required.
hi,i was woundering weather it was ok to feed a hamster fish flacks once in a wiyole because i was board so i gave him one and he loved it.
My friend Kevin says that he gives his hamster hotdog(sassage)meat but I just feed her strawberries, Apple, nuts, and pellets. So, I don’t know.
I know they love mealworms and wax worms but you want to give them those insects sparingly. I would give one mealworm or wax worm per week.
i gave my hamster a gecko and he loved it
They’re omnivorous so they eat both grains and insects in the wild. The pellets you give them are essentially made of meat, which is why they’re usually fine without eating supplemental protein sources. Meat and fruits should only really be given as a treat, in very small quantities, and not every day. I’ve read that there can be concerns with the animal pouching live mealworms and getting bitten on the inside of their cheeks, but I’m not sure if this is really an issue or not. If you’re worried, crush the head before feeding, or feed freeze dried ones. Crickets are common and generally harmless, though the hamster will leave their exoskeleton behind, much the way they do with the shell of a sunflower seed, which might seem gross (or in my opinion, freakin’ cool). You might want to put the hamsters in a tall box or something with the cricket though if you use a wire cage, or it might escape and get behind a shelf and chirp throughout the night at you.
Hamsters do love mealworms and they are a good protein source for them. They do have some fat content, so feed them sparingly. I have a mealworm farm and raise my mealworms on a vitamin enriched diet so that the pets that consume them get the vitamins I have raised the mealworms on. A diet rich in soy protein, calcium and Hawaiian spirulina. My hamsters love ‘em. I start feeding them (once again-very few-you have to limit them. Think of it as a treat)the mealworms when they are very young so they learn how to eat them the right way. At first, I tear the heads off for them, then they learn to bite the heads off themselves so there is no chance of them getting bit by the mealworm while storing them in their pouch). They are a great treat to train your hamsters with!!
Great post, Camille. You are 100% right.
