I own a leopard gecko and I was told they are strictly meat eaters. Never tried giving him anything else but crickets and meal worms. I did put a piece of lettuce in there once for the crickets to eat, and I think he may have eaten it- but they need the good fat and protein that they get from the meat to keep their bodies functioning properly. Hope that helps.

    Yes

Crickets are the most nutritious for your gecko if you “gut feed” them by placing healthy vegetables such as carrots or even fruit and/or cricket feed in your cricket keeper. You also must dust your crickets in a calcium powder every or every other feeding.

    Worms…

There are many types of worms that can also be supplemented in your geckos diet in replacement of crickets. Although crickets are more nutritious for your gecko, many gecko owners have kept healthy geckos on worms alone. Good worms to feed your gecko are mealworms, wax worms, and super worms (for adults geckos only). Again if you are only going to feed your gecko worms, they should be dusted with calcium powder as well.
The worms can also be a potential danger to your gecko because some have such powerful mouths, they can eat your gecko from the inside out. As a safety precaution, I always cut or crush the heads of the worms before giving them to my gecko.
Worms can be given to your gecko in a dish or on a papertowel since they do not move around much after their heads are cut off. Again, the worm should not be larger than the size of your gecko’s head.

    Vitamins…

Your gecko’s diet should be supplemented with calcium and vitamin D3 every day or every other day. these vitamins come in a white powder that you will dust the live food items with. I personally use Rep-Cal powder and shake the crickets with it in a bag before feeding.
A small lid full of the calcium and D3 powder should be left in the tank at all times. if the gecko feels deprived of calcium, it will directly lick the powder.
    Water…

Water should be available to your gecko in a small shallow dish. Anything from a jar lid to a specially bought decorative water dish can be used. The water should be replaced with fresh water daily. It should be shallow so that the gecko is not in danger of drowning.

The dish should be put on the cool side of the tank so that it doesn’t evaporate too quickly. It would also be a good idea to put a couple rocks or a fake leaf in the water if you give your gecko crickets so that they have a way to escape and not drown should they get into the water dish.

You can try, but they won’t eat them. Leopard geckos generally won’t eat anything that’s not moving. Besides, have you seen their teeth? they’d never be able to bite into a carrot and chew it, they just aren’t made for that.

If you’re really dead set on feeding your guys something other than live bugs, try feeding them fruit baby food (like peach or mango). They might lick it, some other geckos love that (day geckos for example). I doubt they’ll get much nutrients out of it, but it won’t hurt them (they might get diarhea from it though).

I don’t own a leo but trust me I know a lot more about them then most the people that do own them. They are strictly carniverous. Although I have heard of some people saying they have gotten their leos to eat some vegetation. They need the protien and stuff from the insects. I would stick to the crickets and worms. Just in case he has a problem with it. He might not realize its food. And he might not be able to actually bite into it. Keep it safe and feed him only the needed foods.
    I hope this helps

Best trick I have come across for Leos. In the feeding bowl do a “tossed salad” meal worms or what ever animal protean you are feeding them and place some small (1/4 the size of u Leos head) veggies they pick up the veggies as they eat the worms. This happens in the wild a lot. Its good for them about 1 -2 times a week. gets some extra vits and helps with digestion. (if there discharge looks a little off (runny or hard) or they are having a hard time going, try this. It helps. I stick with dark leafier greens. Carrots are not on my list but you could do it if you use a cheese grater. =)

Hi! I found a little gecko egg in my backyard. It was as tiny as a 8 year olds finger nails. I’m trying to see what it will eat because babys ( Human or not) need alot of food to survive. I want to know if it will surive on little vegitables because I’m not a ”cricket or worm” Kind of girl. I really want to keep this baby alive, I will let it go to be free when it gets old enough to surive on its own, But for now I want to know what I should feed it. Any Ideas besides insects?

No geckos are insectivorus “which means they only eat insects” you can buy tongs and by already dead crickets or worms and wave it in front of her but nothing else will really work especialy if your going to release it. it wont know what to do for food in the wild
